Repair a Torah scroll (or more)
Torah scrolls are made from us! (Not from people, but from mammals.) Just like us, they age. As ink fades and parchment frays, periodic checking and repair is essential both to maintain kashrut and to avoid compounding damage.
Our team of scribes would love to work with you to repair your Torah scrolls! The Kedusha Project combines halakhic best practices with a strong knowledge in materials science, providing you full transparency as we work, so that you can remain apprised of the work done on your community's most sacred ritual item. We log every repair session, document findings, and communicate with clergy and lay leaders. Our services include cleaning, letter restoration, seam repair, patching, mitigation of future flaking with chemical fixatives, and anything else your scroll may need.
Communities often ask what to expect in terms of cost and scope. Every Torah is different, so we begin with a careful assessment and provide a clear estimate before work begins. With a network of trusted scribes across the United States, we may be able to travel to your community to evaluate and repair the scroll onsite. When travel isn’t practical, we can discuss remote assessment and shipping options. In many cases, we can provide you with information about the provenance, history, and market value of your scroll.
If interested, please send us an email. We will get back to you promptly.
As a very rough ballpark: scrolls repaired within the last 5-7 years are likely to require approximately $1,000 in maintenance. When maintenance has been deferred for longer than that, costs are generally in the range of $2,000-$3,000. A formal quote will always follow an assessment. Please keep in mind that every scroll eventually reaches a point where repair is no longer feasible, and in those cases we will help you think through ways to respectfully retire your beloved Torah.
We approach each Torah with reverence--for the scroll and for the community it serves--while making the repair process accessible and educational for congregations who wish to learn more about their scroll’s story. We hope to do this sacred work with your community soon!
