Ethical mezuzah scroll (Mizrahi/Italian/Rambam)

$140.00

Our mezuzot are written on ethically sourced parchment with a commitment to vegan- and vegetarian-conscious values. While our aspiration is always to use parchment made from roadkill, to meet demand we may also prepare hides from hunted deer or from farm animals that died accidentally. Hunted animals lived fully wild lives until their final moments, and hides are purchased from individual, subsistence hunters. If you prefer one source over another, please let us know.

Unlike most mezuzot on the market, which follow Rabbi Joseph Karo’s Shulchan Aruch and do not require tanning, these scrolls are prepared according to the more demanding specifications of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides, or Rambam). The parchment (klaf, gvil, or duchsustus) is tanned with natural vegetable tannins such as oak galls or acorns. This practice, traditionally favored by Mizrahi (Middle Eastern/North African) and Italian Jewish communities, produces parchment that is kosher to all opinions, including Ashkenazi and Sephardi authorities.

Because of this tanning process, Rambam mezuzot often have a natural color from the tannins—typically a reddish-brown hue—and erasure marks or corrections may appear more prominently than on untanned parchment.

These mezuzot are kosher under the supervision of Rabbi Juan Mejia. Because stock is limited, larger orders may require up to one month of lead time.

We often quip, “We proudly write ugly mezuzot,” because we prioritize kashrut and ethical sourcing over aesthetics. As a result of our sourcing practices and desire to make full use of the animal, some scrolls may show natural holes or irregularities in the parchment, which do not affect their kashrut. The writing is always kosher, though it may not look as polished as factory-produced scrolls.

Available in 4-inch (10 cm) or 5-inch (12.5 cm) sizes. Please let us know your preference when ordering by writing your preference in the notes section at checkout!
