Tefillin Checking and Touch-Up

$200.00

Should you have your tefillin checked? The answer depends on your halakhic approach and circumstances. We generally hold like Rambam: tefillin obtained from a reliable source do not require checking as long as the batim remain firmly sewn shut and in good condition. However, the Shulchan Aruch recommends periodically checking tefillin that aren’t used regularly.

If you received a pair of unknown provenance, or if there’s reason to suspect the scrolls may have been compromised, we recommend having them examined.

For $200, we will:

  • Open your tefillin carefully

  • Check the kashrut of the scrolls

  • Touch up the paint on the batim

  • Return the scrolls to their places

  • Resew the tefillin by hand

We can also address minor repairs, such as straightening a warped titura, and, if you purchase new retzuot, we’ll attach and tie them for you.

If we discover issues affecting kashrut, we’ll send photos, explain the concern, and work with you to find the best path forward. Please be aware that some scrolls may prove unkosher; if replacement isn’t feasible, we’ll issue a partial refund and return the unsewn tefillin to you.

We know your tefillin are important to you! Every pair we handle is treated with the utmost care and reverence, as a vessel of kedusha entrusted to our hands.
