Our retzuot are crafted from ethically sourced hides, prepared with a commitment to vegan- and vegetarian-conscious values, as well as environmentally-conscious production methods. While our aspiration is always to use hides from roadkill, to meet demand we may also prepare hides from hunted deer or from farm animals that died accidentally. Hunted animals lived fully wild lives until their final moments, and hides are purchased from individual, subsistence hunters. If you prefer one source over another, please let us know.
Each strap is cut, dyed, and finished according to halakhic requirements. For environmental sustainability, retzuot are tanned using vegetable tannins (rather than hazardous chromium tanning, which is common in the industry). Vegetable tanning also produces softer, stretchier, and more durable leather. Straps are 13 mm wide and 1 mm thick. To comply with the highest standards of both halakhah and durability, straps are black all the way through.
Premium straps are full grain leather, which is especially strong and durable. A laser cutter is used to mark precise and consistent width of the straps, and the final cutting is done by hand to maintain the intention of producing tefillin lishmah.
Kosher under the supervision of Rabbi Juan Mejia.
