Ethical Tefillin

from $300.00

These tefillin are made with a commitment to vegan- and vegetarian-conscious values. While our aspiration is always to prepare parchment, batim, straps, and scrolls from roadkill, to meet demand we may also use hides from hunted deer or from farm animals that died accidentally. Hunted animals lived fully wild lives until their final moments, and hides are purchased from individual, subsistence hunters. If you prefer one source over another, please let us know.

These tefillin are handmade—so be prepared for them to contain aesthetic irregularities in the parchment, batim (boxes), or retzuot (straps). These imperfections—whether small holes, uneven surfaces, or visible corrections—do not affect their kashrut.

Maybe all you need are the cruelty-free components, and you'd prefer to work with a different scribe—or scribe them yourself? We are happy to offer you three options:

  1. Batim ($300) – These are the rawhide cases of the tefillin. These will not include the straps or parchment.

  2. Ready-to-scribe kit ($450) – Batim, retzuot (straps), blank parchment, gid (sinew thread), tail hairs, and a cruelty-free writing implement (your choice of foraged feather or reed). This is everything a scribe should need to create ethical tefillin.

  3. Fully scribed and assembled tefillin ($1,200) – These are ready for immediate use. We will scribe the tefillin, insert the scrolls into the batim, sew the batim shut, and attach and tie the retzuot for you.

Kosher under the supervision of Rabbi Juan Mejia. Please allow 1-2 month lead time.
